Inside Timeout Tattoo: A Conversation with One of Rocky Hill’s Creative Leaders

Rocky Hill, Connecticut is home to a growing creative hub—and at the center of it is

Timeout Tattoo. I sat down with one of the co-owners and artists, Flo to learn how this

shop is redefining what a tattoo studio can be like. From its origins to its vision for the

future, here’s an inside look at the people, passion, and purpose behind the brand.

Welcome to Timeout Tattoo

When I arrived at Timeout Tattoo, I was greeted by a warm, easygoing energy that

immediately set the tone for the conversation. The co-owner - an artist and daily

operations lead, Flo introduced himself simply: “I’m a tattoo artist here, an artist overall, and an owner. I take care of the daily things in the shop and outside the shop as well.”

The shop is co-run by multiple artists, each bringing something unique to the table, with another co-owner, Genesis, who wasn’t present that day.

The Creative Spark Behind the Business

When asked how Timeout Tattoo came to be, the owner explained that the core

inspiration was simple: art itself. “The passion here is art of the tattoos, what we do on the daily. But a lot of our artists do things outside of here too.”

Photography, clothing design, illustration, and other creative niches are all part of the

team’s identity. Timeout Tattoo isn’t just a tattoo studio—it’s a multidisciplinary art home.

Evolving the Mission

In the early days, the focus was on establishing the shop. Today, the mission has

grown: “This year is about spreading the brand—making sure our name goes as far as it can in Connecticut and the U.S. We’re building ourselves more as individual artists too.”

Brand building and spotlighting each artist’s unique skill set are now driving priorities.

More Than Tattoos: A Hub for Creativity

Beyond tattoos, the team offers other creative services and products:

  • Photography (travel, lifestyle, creative)

  • Custom clothing and art merchandise

  • Community events with local vendors

“Outside of here, there’s a lot of different things people can do. People are finding their

other niches as well.” This multifaceted approach strengthens their identity as more than a traditional tattoo shop.

Daily Life Behind the Scenes

Despite what people assume about tattoo shop chaos, daily life is refreshingly steady:

“Daily is chill - posting, responding to people on Instagram, answering the phone, takin

people in, tattooing. The daily stuff is execution.”

What matters most is the client experience. “Come in here, have good energy, tattoo, and provide a good vibe.”

Connecting with Community

Timeout Tattoo partners with local vendors, especially during events and flash days -

coffee spots, food trucks, and local creators are invited in.

They’ve also strengthened ties with the town, even hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony

with the mayor for their one year anniversary.

A Diverse and Welcoming Customer Base

One of the studio’s biggest strengths is its wideranging audience: “I had a seventy year old guy come in a few days ago. It’s all over the place.”

The old stigma around tattoos has faded, and the shop welcomes everyone—from

anime fans to first timers to grandparents getting matching tattoos.

Trends and Styles

Popular requests include:

  • Anime tattoos

  • Cartoon pieces

  • Fantasy and fandom themes like Game of Thrones

As the owner’s personal style develops, they’re noticing new audiences gravitate toward their work: “I see a curious bunch—more nightlife, more anime.”

Building Customer Relationships

Their philosophy is simple: “Have a good time. It happens naturally. The atmosphere, good people—you want to stay.”

Games, conversation, comfort, and authenticity fuel repeat visits.

Marketing and Growth

Last year they focused on settling in. This year, they’re stepping up:

  • Increased social media push

  • More paid promotions

  • Town involvement and inperson community engagement

  • Shop improvements like signage and decor

They prefer handwritten records and simple financial systems, whatever keeps them

grounded and organized.

Financial Lessons and Strategy

They planned extensively before opening, which helped minimize financial challenges.

Upgrades like new flooring require careful budgeting, but they focus on slow,

thoughtful improvements. “Don’t spend twice. Take your time. Grow off what you need.”

They’re still navigating taxes but they’re learning.

Where Timeout Tattoo Will Be in 5 Years

Unlike many businesses that dream of expansion, this owner wants to invest deeply in

one location: “I like one location. Why can’t Timeout Tattoo be the next big thing people think about in Connecticut?”

Growth will come in quality, not quantity.

What Makes Them Different

In an industry full of talent, Timeout Tattoo stands out through:

  • Atmosphere

  • Connection

  • Authenticity

  • Care for clients of all tattoo sizes

“It doesn’t matter if it’s a small heart or a big back piece, you’re going to have the same

good time.”

Advice for New Business Owners

Whether you want to open a tattoo shop or a photography studio:

  • Do the numbers.

  • Research everything—not just your own industry.

  • Be realistic.

  • Network.

  • Be genuine.

  • Never cut corners.

  • Be honest with your team and clients.

“It’s okay to take losses. It’s okay for ideas to shift. Be open. Be a good person.”

For Anyone Considering a Tattoo

The owner encourages people on the fence - like my Dad - to just start the

conversation: “We’ll talk to you about it. It’s good, it’s clean, it’s a vibe. We’ll help with design, placement, and honesty. We’ll look after you.”

Closing Thoughts

Timeout Tattoo is more than a studio. It’s a creative family, a community hub, and a

welcoming space for anyone ready to express themselves through art.

If you’re thinking about getting a tattoo - or just want to experience the vibe - Timeout

Tattoo in Rocky Hill might be the perfect place to start.
