Interview Date: April 15th 2026, Wednesday

Synopsis by: Aryan Santosh Jangle

Inside Bella Flora : What Students Can Learn from Running a Local Business

Running a small business is not just about selling products—it’s about creativity,

problem-solving, people skills, and dedication. Bella Flora, a local flower shop, offers a

great real-life example of what it takes to turn a passion into a career. Through an

interview with the shop’s owner and head designer, students can learn valuable lessons about careers, business, and personal growth.

Finding a Career Path

The owner of Bella Flora didn’t randomly choose floristry—the inspiration came from her grandmother, who worked with flowers. Being around flowers growing up helped spark an interest that eventually became a career.

Before opening her flower shop, she worked as the Director of the Rocky Hill Chamber

of Commerce. That job helped her learn how businesses work and allowed her to make

connections in the local community. Later, those skills and relationships helped her

succeed as a business owner.

What Students Can Learn:

  • Career interests can come from family or personal experiences

  • You don’t have to start in your “dream job” right away

  • Skills from one job can help you succeed in another

What a Business Owner’s Day Is Really Like

No two days at Bella Flora are the same. Some days are slow, while others—especially

around holidays like Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day—are extremely busy. One major

challenge is that customers often order at the last minute, which makes planning

difficult. Unlike many stores, every floral arrangement at Bella Flora is designed by the owner herself. Nothing is copied or mass-produced, which makes the shop stand out.

What Students Can Learn:

  • Jobs don’t always follow a predictable schedule

  • Creativity is often combined with stress and responsibility

  • Original work helps businesses stand out

Skills That Matter in the Real World

Although floristry is a creative job, the owner explained that business skills are just as

important as artistic ones. Running a business requires computer skills, understanding money, and using social media effectively. Without a website and social media presence, it’s very hard for a business to succeed today.

People skills are also essential. Talking with customers, listening to their needs, and

building relationships are all part of daily work.

What Students Can Learn:

  • Creative careers still require strong technical skills

  • Communication and social skills are valuable in almost any job

  • Technology plays a huge role in modern careers

Working With Customers

When customers request custom arrangements, the owner asks questions about the

occasion, budget, and preferences. Paying attention to details helps ensure customers

are happy with the final product.

Being patient and open-minded is especially important when working with different

personalities.

What Students Can Learn:

  • Listening carefully is a professional skill

  • Customer service affects a business’s reputation

  • Patience and respect go a long way

Challenges of Owning a Small Business

A major challenge in floristry is working with fresh flowers, which don’t last forever. The

owner chooses to buy smaller amounts more frequently so the flowers stay fresh, even

though this costs more. Other challenges include energy bills, delivery expenses, and

gas costs.

What Students Can Learn:

  • Important decisions often involve trade-offs

  • Quality sometimes costs more but builds trust

  • Problem-solving is part of daily work

Family and Community Support

Bella Flora is truly a family effort. During busy times, family members help with

weddings and large orders. The owner also values supporting and connecting with the

local community, believing that small businesses help create strong neighborhoods.

What Students Can Learn:

  • Asking for help is important

  • Teamwork supports success

  • Local businesses build relationships, not just sales

Advice for Students Interested in Business or Creative Careers

The owner shared honest advice: success doesn’t happen overnight. Students should

research their interests, expect challenges, and understand that growth takes time.

Even though floral shops face competition from online stores and big chains, local

businesses succeed by offering quality, creativity, and personal service.

Key Takeaways for Students:

  • Be prepared for setbacks and don’t give up

  • Persistence is more important than fast success

  • Unique skills help you stand out

A Final Thought

When asked about her favorite flower, the owner chose the white oriental lily—simple,

elegant, and timeless. Just like her business, it represents care, pride in quality, and thoughtful design.
